According to the Potato Pro’s data, Punjab is a chief producer and supplier of seed potatoes in India, supplying approximately 60-70% of India’s seed potatoes.
Despite the above-mentioned fact, the quality of potato seeds is deteriorating day-by-day due to causes such as malpractice of seeds by traders, and misbranding seeds from other states as “Punjab Potato Seeds”. Consequently, this is projecting a bad reputation of the state in other regions of the country.
The unavailability of quality seed material is the major restriction for the optimum potato seed production in the state. An insufficient supply of certified seeds and negligence in the traceability of potato seeds are what make farmers to entirely depend on informal seed sources.
